Never Brush Your Gums

I see many patients who have permanently damaged their gums because some dentist or hygienist told them to” brush their gums” to “stimulate” them. Really? I ask the patient, if they brush their ears or their nose. This silly question is thought provoking and begs the question about the veracity of this bad habit. Brushing your gums causes the gums to recede. Receding gums expose parts of teeth that are more vulnerable to tooth decay. The gums never grow back, sometimes requiring painful and costly gum surgery. So please, just gently brush your teeth. Your gums and teeth will thank you.
